How to Install Batman Arkham Knight Mods on PC

Gaming PC desk at night ready for installing game mods

In short, here is how to install Batman Arkham Knight mods on PC. Download them from Nexus Mods, back up your game files and saves, and copy the mod’s files by hand into the folder its readme names. Vortex doesn’t handle most Arkham Knight mods and the game has no Steam Workshop, so manual installs are the norm. The right folder depends on the kind of mod.

Quick answer Back up first. Skin and costume packages usually go in a numbered folder under DLC, inside Content\BmGame. Config and console command mods are copied into the game’s root folder. ReShade presets sit next to BatmanAK.exe in Binaries\Win64. Save file mods replace the saves in Steam’s userdata folder for app 208650.

Before you install anything

Arkham Knight mods replace or add game files, so a few minutes of prep saves a reinstall later.

  • PC only. Mods work on the Steam and Epic Games Store versions. Console versions can’t load them.
  • Get mods from Nexus Mods. The Arkham Knight section on Nexus Mods is the main hub, with virus-scanned files and comment threads where you can check for problems. A free account is needed to download.
  • Find your game folder. On Steam it is steamapps\common\Batman Arkham Knight in your library. On Epic it is the Batman Arkham Knight folder in your Epic library. In Steam you can right-click the game, choose Manage, then Browse local files.
  • Back up. Copy any file a mod will overwrite, and copy your save folder, before you start.
  • Read the readme. Some mods need a specific DLC installed or a helper tool, and the mod page says which.

Stick to mods that change looks, cameras or single-player settings. Skip anything that claims to unlock paid DLC you don’t own, because it is the kind of file that gets pulled and breaks your install.

Save files Steam\userdata\(your ID)\208650\remote None

How to install Batman Arkham Knight mods step by step

Most mods on Nexus come as a zip or rar archive. This is the general process, and the sections below cover the differences by type.

Computer screen with folders, where mod files are copied into the game directory
  1. Download the mod from its Nexus Mods page with the Manual download button.
  2. Extract the archive with 7-Zip, WinRAR or Windows’ own extractor into a temporary folder.
  3. Look at the folder structure inside. If it contains Binaries and BmGame, it mirrors the game root. If it contains a single BmGame folder, it usually belongs under a DLC folder.
  4. Back up any game file with the same name.
  5. Copy the files into the target folder and allow overwriting only when the readme says to.
  6. Launch the game and check the change, then add the next mod. Installing one at a time makes conflicts easy to find.

Skins, config mods and ReShade

Skin and costume mods

Many Arkham Knight skins are installed inside a numbered DLC folder, at DLC\(number)\Content\BmGame, rather than in the main DLC folder. Players on the Steam forums report that dropping files into the top level of DLC corrupts the install, while any of the numbered folders works. Some skins also need a particular skin pack installed, so check the requirements line on the mod page.

Config and console command mods

Arkham Knight has no usable in-game console, so mods such as The Definitive Console Command Mod bind commands to keys for manual saves, field of view and single-player cheats. They ship with Binaries and BmGame folders that you copy into the game root. Back up BmGame\Config\BmInput.ini first. That mod’s author notes the new BmInput.ini must stay read-only, or the game restores the original.

Texture mods with Resorep

Some retextures don’t replace game files at all. They use Resorep, a texture injection tool that needs Java. You add Binaries\Win64\BatmanAK.exe as an application in Resorep, choose 64-bit, and paste the mod’s image files into Resorep’s modded folder in Documents. Get Resorep from the link on the mod page you are installing.

ReShade presets

Graphics presets need ReShade, installed from its official site and pointed at BatmanAK.exe. Put the preset .ini file in the same folder as the executable, start the game, press Home to open the ReShade menu, and pick the preset from the list.

Installing save file mods

Save mods let you skip ahead or start with Riddler trophies collected. They are not a cheat for anyone else, but they will overwrite your own progress if you skip the backup.

  1. Start a new game, play until it autosaves, then quit. This creates a dummy save.
  2. Open Steam\userdata\(your Steam ID)\208650\remote. The 208650 folder is Arkham Knight’s Steam app ID.
  3. Copy the existing save files somewhere safe.
  4. Put the mod’s save files into the remote folder and make sure their names match the dummy save’s naming.

If Steam Cloud brings your old save back, turn off Steam Cloud for the game while you test, then turn it on again once the modded save loads.

Fixing problems and removing mods

Once you know how to install Batman Arkham Knight mods, undoing them is the same process in reverse. These are the usual problems.

Backlit gaming keyboard used to open mod menus and hotkeys
  • If the game crashes on launch, remove the last mod you added. A conflict between two mods touching the same file is the usual cause.
  • If a mod stopped working after an update, a file check or patch restored the originals. Copy the mod in again.
  • If a skin is missing in the Showcase, the required DLC is not installed, or the files are in the wrong DLC folder level.
  • For a full reset, delete what you added, restore your backups, and run Verify integrity of game files from the game’s Properties in Steam.

FAQ

Does Vortex work with Batman Arkham Knight?

Not for most mods. Players and mod guides report that Vortex does not handle Arkham Knight, so mods are installed by hand. Follow the readme on each mod page, since the target folder differs by mod type.

Is there a Steam Workshop for Batman Arkham Knight?

No. Arkham Knight has no Steam Workshop support, so Nexus Mods is the main place to find mods for it.

Can I use Arkham Knight mods on PS4 or Xbox?

No. Mods for Batman Arkham Knight work only on the PC version, on Steam or the Epic Games Store. Console versions can’t load modified files.

Why did my Arkham Knight mod stop working?

A Steam file check or an update can restore the original files and undo a mod. Settings files that a mod needs set to read-only, like BmInput.ini in some config mods, are also reset if that attribute is removed. Reinstall the mod from your backup copy.

How do I remove Arkham Knight mods?

Delete the files you added, restore your backed-up originals, then run Verify integrity of game files in Steam to replace anything that was changed. For save mods, copy your own saves back into the remote folder.
